Yorks Hill, with its stretches of 1 in 4

, has always been a tough challenge, at one time it was considered an accomplishment to even get up the hill. Now-a-days it’s still difficult to achieve a really fast time in this Catford Hill Climb classic event. However:The course record of 1min 47.6

set by Phil Mason a quarter of a century ago must surely be overdue for improvement. So to celebrate this longstanding achievement his club, the San Fairy Ann C.C., have generously donated a special prize of £250 to the rider who sets a new record. Phil together with his club-mates from the1983 record breaking team will be there on the day to present this prize.Dan Fleeman’s came within 1.15 secs of breaking the record ride

last year when his winning was witnessed by hundreds of spectators. Currently racing in Australia he is unable to compete. However the 2006 winner Bill Bell (Gemini BC) who came second last year will be riding so he must be a serious contender for this prize. So will 2007 3rd place Robert Gough (Johns Bikes), 4th Simon Richardson (Plowman Craven) & 5th Jody Crawforth (Artic RT), who have all entered. As has Matt Goodes (De Laune) four times winner of this event.

If the winner beaks the record he could walk away with £720 in prizes. Altogether there are over £1,500 in prizes to be won including £650 of quality cycling kit donated by Rapha.

Entries for this event close on 1st October

(Details on www.catfordcc.co.uk) Rumour has it that evergreen Max Pendleton (father of World & Olympic sprint champion, Victoria) who won this event on no less than 8 occasions from 1965 to 1973 is contemplating entering. In which case this should something of a ‘revival’ after 35 years! But entries are not restricted to CTT registered riders because it’s open to all-comers and anyone can enter to ‘Have a Go’ and try to get up this testing climb. There is even a prize for the fastest mountain biker.

The ‘Catford’, first held in 1887, has always been both a spectacle and a social occasion so vast crowds are again expected. The club is organising a group ride to Yorks Hill from Bromley South Station meeting at 9.00am (Catch the 8.24 from Victoria)
