The Hounslow open 25 mile time trial was won in decisive style by Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC), who also led his club to win the team prize. His time was 52 minutes 24 seconds.

Dennis was one of the few established riders to equal their qualifying times on a day when although conditions looked good, the low air temperature (5 degrees C. at 8 am) proved a hindrance, especially to the early starters. After the race the East Grinstead man commented that he had had a trouble free ride, and had felt it was warm enough for him to dispense with his arm warmers before the start. His only slight disappointment was that his main rival for overall honours, Julian Jenkinson, had punctured before the start, and although he had not lost any time in the event itself, his warm up had been disrupted; this must have slowed Jenkinson, but it is impossible to say by how much.

In the tandem category Paul Holdsworth/Andy Gilles (54.02) came out winners after a close struggle with Mark Silver/Trystan MacDonald (55.16) (Both pairs Hounslow & Dist.). However their times clearly reflect the fact that they started first, before the solos, and so suffered worst from the cold.

The Veterans’ Age Standard was also hotly contested with only 1 minute 12 seconds separating the first three, Jeff Marshall (Hounslow) coming out on top doing 1.0.40. to give a plus of 20 minutes 01 seconds with I. Windall (Farnham RC) second (+19.13) and Rob Gilmour third (+18.49).

Best improvement went to Martin Brown (Hounslow) who was a massive 6 minutes 49 seconds better than his qualifying time. Martin is clearly getting the feel of time trialling, but it is to be hoped that others note the benefits of riding open events on good courses.

D. Percival (34th Nomads) took the ladies’ prize recording 1.3.16, with Jo Wells (Hounslow) second (1.4.48).

Mention must also be made of David George (Hounslow) who achieved his first under the hour 25 with 59.44. This was a well deserved result for a rider who has improved dramatically this season. We look forward with enthusiasm to his efforts in 2009.

The event took place on the A31 Farnham – Alton road and attracted 78 entries. It was efficiently organised by Bruce McMichael.
